Over the past few weeks, I’ve been enjoying the beautiful weather and neglecting my blog. But time for an update. Poison’s Kiss has an official release date of January 10, 2017 AND a cover reveal is coming very soon.

Lately, I’ve been feeling a lot like this:

Loving

duckFor five years, this duck has built her nest and laid her eggs in a little corner right outside my office window. She arrives in early spring and sits faithfully on her nest, despite noise or chaos or me rolling the trash bin right past her on garbage day. And then, each year, we wake up one morning and she’s gone, leaving half-a-dozen cracked eggs behind. One of these times, I hope we get to actually see her leave the nest with her babies in tow, but so far, that’s eluded us. (She left us just this week.) But I’m loving that we have our own little reminder that it’s springtime.

Reading

Six-of-CrowsSix of Crows has been on my to-read list for months and I finally dug in last week. I should have started earlier in the day, because once the story took off, there was no turning back. I was up very late, but fell asleep very happy. Highly recommended.

Watching

Season two of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was just released on Netflix. Enough said.

Listening To

For months, friends have been raving about Hamilton, so earlier this week, I bought the soundtrack. Yes, it’s as good as everyone says. Yes, the music is now perpetually stuck in my head. And yes, when it comes to Seattle in a year-and-a-half, I will be the first in line for tickets.

Thinking About

Poison’s Kiss is now available for preorder and seeing my book listed for sale, with my name as the author, is surreal. I’ve waited so long for this and now it’s starting to feel like it might actually be happening.

Anticipating

In just a few weeks, I’m going to a writers’ conference that several other online friends will be attending as well and I can’t wait to meet them. But I’m nervous too—I feel like I’m always better on the page than in person. Will they like me? Will I be awkward? Is it weird I’m worrying about this at my age?

Wishing

That I had tickets to Hamilton and a trip to New York planned. (See above.)

Making Me Happy

The Raven King is out today and the anticipation of reading it and finally reaching the conclusion of this series that I’ve loved for years is making me very happy.Raven King

THE CLASS OF 2K17 MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION

UPDATE: The Class of 2K17 is now FULL. We had a huge amount of interest this year and the group filled just a few minutes after opening. If you’d like to be placed on the waiting list in case someone drops out, (publication dates can and do change, and we may lose a few members)  feel free to fill out the application at the bottom of this post.

What is the Class of 2K17?

The “2K Classes” are groups of debut YA/MG authors who focus on MARKETING. We pay dues ($275 per person), maintain a private forum, create a website, and commit to 10-15 hours per month to collectively promote our books. Membership is capped at 20 authors, and the 2k Classes have become well-known among librarians and booksellers, so there are benefits to joining.

History:

The first 2K Class was founded in 2007 by Greg R. Fishbone and has been a strong promotional network/outlet for debut YA and MG authors every year since. Here are some 2k alumni you might be familiar with: Jay Asher, Melissa Marr, Rebecca Stead, Sara Zarr, Jo Knowles, Nancy Viau, Sydney Salter, Rhonda Hayter, Jeri Smith-Ready, and Jennifer Hubbard, among many other talented authors. And word on the street is that there might be a 2K Alumni group formed in the future. Here are links to check out the past few years of the Class of 2K websites, books and members:

Typically, group activities include developing common promotional materials (website, blog, other social media, postcards, brochures, etc.); creating press releases and/or hiring a group publicist; forming panels to speak at conferences; and supporting one another while sharing information about the publishing world as we discover it.

Membership Requirements:

I’m stealing this “currently” blog post idea from Katy Upperman, who stole it from Kate Hart, who stole it from Amy Lukavics, who stole it from someone else. It’s a fun idea and I plan to use it often. Feel free to steal it from any one of us.

Loving

That the world is in bloom. I love springtime. The weather has warmed up, birds are chirping outside my window, and everywhere I look I see color—deep pink rhododendrons, red Japanese maples, cherry blossoms. I can almost smell the hope in the air.

Reading

I recently finished The Winner’s Kiss by Marie Rutkoski and it was ewinner's kissverything I hoped it would be and more. I’ve loved this series from the beginning and the author did such a beautiful job making the final book its own story, while still finishing of the arc of the series in such a satisfying way. It was wonderful.

Also, not too long ago I read Secrets of a Charmed Life by Susan Meissner and I was captivated. This historical fiction is a story-within-a-story, alternating between current day Oxford England and 1940s war-torn England. It was beautifully written and I will definitely pick up other books by Susan Meissner in the future.

Watching

We took our kids to see Zootopia recently and it got two thumbs up from the whole family. It’s sweet and funny and just as fun for adults as it is for kids. Also, my husband and I saw 10 Cloverfield Lane and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, legitimately freaked out. It was definitely scary in that subtle, creepy way that is more terrifying than monsters could ever be. I’m still thinking about the ending, though, and still not sure how I feel about it.

Listening To

We just got back from a Spring break road trip and sadly, didn’t bring our own music. One thing you learn when you’re in the car for 30 hours over seven days is that the same ten songs play over-and-over. (And over). I think I’ll give my XM radio a break for a bit.

Thinking About

Plotting my next book. It seems strange that my first book isn’t out yet and I’m already gearing up to write the third, but it’s true. Publishing moves at a pace that is hard to explain unless you’ve lived through it, but the short version is that authors are writing two or more years ahead of what’s actually hitting bookshelves.

Anticipating

My book cover. I haven’t seen it yet and so I’m thinking about seeing it ALL. THE. TIME. I was actually pretty chill with this until I turned in my draft for my most recent book, but now that I don’t have the distraction of writing, I’m pretty much obsessed.

Wishing

For more hours in the day. Or maybe for more hours at night so that I could sleep more? I always have so much more to do than time to do it all.

Making Me Happy

All the wonderful readers who have found my book on Goodreads. It makes me so happy to check in every so often and see that more people have heard about Poison’s Kiss and have added it to their shelves.
